"River Coonoor is a true blessing; littering will attract fine", District Collector J. Innocent Divya

The Nilgiris : The Nilgiris District Collector, J. Innocent Divya on Wednesday has warned of imposing fine and legal action against violators who dump wastes in the Coonoor River.

The Nilgiris : The Nilgiris District Collector, J. Innocent Divya on Wednesday has warned of imposing fine and legal action against violators who dump wastes in the Coonoor River. 

Flagging off a cleaning drive by NGO Clean Coonoor, the District Collector opined that "This river in Coonoor is a true blessing for the residents. Of late, regular dumping of wastes has deteriorated the water body. Dumping of garbage in water bodies is an alarming environmental and public health hazard."

She warned people to refrain from littering River Coonoor and warned that a fine of RS. 5000 to RS. 10,000 would be leived on offenders who pollute the water body. 

"Violators will be identified through the CCTV cameras installed at the spot. Especially, traders from the market area should refrain from dumping garbage, meat and fish wastes from stalls, into the water bodies", urged the Collector.

During the cleaning drive, Collector, J. Innocent Divya said that the district administration has launched measures to remove encroachments from water bodies and supply channels. 

Residents abutting along the River, should take up responsiblilty and deposit garbages in the dust bins placed by the municipality. She also noted that the river water is been used as drinking water hence polluting it would lead to health hazards. 

The Collector also discussed with the representatives of the NGO on the upcoming cleaning drives and strengthening of the bund.
